Tasting bar Basel

We have just recently launched Agwa de Bolivia and Bad Angel with Dufry.
They are both listed in Milan, Prague, Busan Korea, Basel Switzerland, Moscow Russia and Bali Indonesia.

The first tasting promotion was carried out in early March in Basel, Switzerland, supported by an in-store tasting which also included giving away Agwa party masks for the passengers.

We have heard some very good results have been achieved with the highlight being in Bali.
This is a resort favoured by Australian tourists and with Agwa’s big following in both Sydney and Melbourne, we were delighted to see fantastic sales of Agwa and Bad Angel at the airport.
We are planning to do a tasting soon in Bali, where over 1 million Australians visit each year.

Hope Bay springs MLP range from Niagara

Hope Bay range at Niagara Duty Free

Steve Richardson and the team at Niagara Duty Free have launched a new range of wines at their store located on the Canadian side of the Rainbow Bridge border crossing between Canada and the US.

The wines from Paul Sapin are distributed in Canadian duty free through Roger Thompson of Haleybrooke International. Barry Global Innovation is the global travel retail representative of the brand.

The ‘Hope Bay’ range of Paul Sapin wines come in 750ml and 187ml Multi Layered Pet (MLP) bottles and are sourced from premium vineyards in the Western Cape at the Southern tip of Africa. The new range celebrates the annual spectacle of the Southern Right Whale migrating to this region to calve and nurse their young. Their passage is a long established feature of the region much like the wine harvest, which also signifies the passing of a season.

The unit where the wines at Niagara Duty Free are displayed was designed by the team at the store depicting the distinctive Whale Tail Logo of the Hope Bay range.

Niagara Duty Free managing director Steve Richardson said: “When we first saw and tasted the Hope Bay line of wines we knew right away that this was a perfect match for duty-free customers. The fact that the bottle is unbreakable allows us to satisfy a unique need within the active and travelling consumer. We often will drop a bottle right in front of the customer to demonstrate this. The weight of each bottle is less and this is important to people who are travelling by air, as the additional charges on luggage weight by the airlines has escalated over the last few years.

“Many of our shoppers are looking for ‘green’ products and the Hope Bay Bottle is a 100% recyclable, which allows us to promote this aspect as well. In a market where everyone likes to try new product we have a number of things to talk about with the consumer, before we discuss the high quality of the wine… this allows us to engage the customer, put the bottle in their hands, and watch it go into their basket,” he added.

Barry Global Innovation founder Barry Geoghegan concluded: “I must commend and thank Steve, Pat and all the team at Niagara Duty Free for the superbly creative display and support for the wines. We are delighted that the new range of wines has proved so popular with Canadian operators and consumers alike and we are really excited that as the busy summer season continues more and more customers will be able to taste the great wines in such a unique and practical format that is MLP.”

Nordic Travel Retail Seminar 2012

MLP’s Eco Friendly Packaging shines in Scandinavia

I have just returned from the very well run Nordic Travel Retail Seminar 2012. The seminar had over 100 delegates from all the key players in the region: Tallink Silja, Viking Line, Color Line, Heinemann, In Flight Services, Nuance, Scandlines, Airport Retail Norway, Thomas Cook Airlines etc.

It was a very well structured event with some world class speakers and some fascinating figures on the travel retail business in the region. This part of the world has probably the best markets for “MLP the Friendly wine bottles”. The people of the region have very strong views on Eco Friendly packaging and we have many many wines listed at the local domestic State run liquor stores System Bolaget, Alko etc.
Also, the fact that locals travel between the different Nordic countries by world class ferries makes this area one of the worlds biggest consumers of wine for Duty free.
I think the big Nordic tradition of hiking and cross country skiing make the MLP range a very practical format to take to the great outdoors of Scandinavia.
There was also great interest in the mini wine bottles gift packs (World Wine Collection) which, it was generally felt would be a great wine gift.
These markets are very different to other regions and we travelled through the night from Helsinki to Stockholm in order to experience just how the Duty Free business works in the region.
I have to finally say that the warmth of the people and willingness to help with new business make this one of the best travel retail events I have ever attended.

Diverse international wine audience attends TFWA Singapore

My review of TFWA Singapore 2012

I have just returned from a very busy but successful trip to South East Asia. I was privileged to be one of only 5 overseas visitors in attendance to celebrate Duty Free Philippines 25th anniversary hosted with great warmth by Chief Operating Officer Lorenzo (Enchong) Formoso. I really loved the warmth and family atmosphere that was generated at the celebration. It is a country that I will visit again many more times. I then attended the very well organized TFWA AP Singapore show at the Suntec exhibition centre. The organization was again first class and the venue and team at the show need to be congratulated, nothing was a problem. I managed to attend two of the excellent seminars: one on in flight opportunities and another on emerging markets in Asia. The whole scale of growth in Asia Pacific is so impressive as the people of the region begin to travel more and seek out international brands that they had not been previously exposed to.

The new mini wine bottles packaged in a premium gift pack was one of the highlights of the show and a first for travel retail wine. The fact that the gift packs are so light and compact and that they contain so many types of wine from all over the world means that this gift is unique in terms of wine for duty free. I had visitors on the Paul Sapin stand from Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Sweden, India, UAE, Guam, Singapore, Malaysia, Maldives, South Africa, Vietnam, USA, Bangladesh, Macau, Hong Kong, Germany, Qatar, Bahrain, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.

The range of friendly MLP wines were so well received and have now been introduced to many new Asian markets. The reaction to the New “World Wine Cellar“ premium wine gift pack with wines from around the world and a first for wine in travel retail was fantastic. I look forward to visiting this part of the world again soon as it is so refreshing to be in markets that are growing so fast and are so positive about the future.
